CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Wireshark (Packet Analyzer Software) and classified as critical. This issue affects the function dissect_capwap_data of the file packet-capwap.c of the component CAPWAP Dissector. The manipulation as part of a Crafted Packet leads to a numeric error vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-189. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

The dissect_capwap_data function in epan/dissectors/packet-capwap.c in the CAPWAP dissector in Wireshark 1.6.x before 1.6.16 and 1.8.x before 1.8.8 incorrectly uses a -1 data value to represent an error condition, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a crafted packet.

The weakness was disclosed 05/29/2013 as not defined changelog entry (Website). The advisory is shared at wireshark.org. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the project team. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-4074 since 06/09/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.

The exploit is available at bugs.wireshark.org. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 79601 (F5 Networks BIG-IP : Multiple Wireshark vulnerabilities (SOL15868)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family F5 Networks Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166238 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for wireshark (SUSE-SU-2013:1276-1)).

Upgrading to version 1.6.16 or 1.8.8 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at wireshark.org. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at anonsvn.wireshark.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (84820), Tenable (79601) and Exploit-DB (33556).
