The weakness was published 11/17/2016 by Tim Coen with Curesec Research Team as Lepton 2.2.2: Code Execution as confirmed mailinglist post (Full-Disclosure). The advisory is shared at seclists.org. The public release has been coordinated with Lepton. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. A authentication is necessary for exploitation. Technical details and a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue. The advisory points out:
When uploading a file in the media tab, there is a client-side as well as a server-side extension check. The server-side check can be bypassed by including a valid extension before the desired extension, leading to code execution or XSS.
A public exploit has been developed by Tim Coen in HTTP POST Request and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at seclists.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 169 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. By approaching the search of inurl:LEPTON_stable_2.2.2/upload/admins/media/index.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The code used by the exploit is:
