A vulnerability has been found in NVIDIA GPU Driver (Hardware Driver Software) (the affected version is unknown) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function DxgDdiEscape
in the library nvlddmkm.sys of the component Kernel Mode Layer. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
All versions of NVIDIA Windows GPU Display Driver contain a vulnerability in the kernel mode layer (nvlddmkm.sys) handler for DxgDdiEscape where a value passed from a user to the driver is used without validation as the size input to memcpy(), causing a buffer overflow, leading to denial of service or potential escalation of privileges.
The bug was discovered 10/18/2016. The weakness was disclosed 12/16/2016 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at nvidia.custhelp.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2016-8817 since 10/18/2016. The exploitation appears to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 27 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 95370 (NVIDIA Windows GPU Display Driver 34x.x < 342.00 / 367.x < 369.73 / 367.x < 369.71 (GRID) / 375.x < 375.63 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context l.
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (95370).
