QEMU USB EHCI Emulation resource consumption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in QEMU (Virtualization Software) (unknown version). This issue affects an unknown code block of the component USB EHCI Emulation. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource consumption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-400. The product does not properly control the allocation and maintenance of a limited resource, thereby enabling an actor to influence the amount of resources consumed, eventually leading to the exhaustion of available resources. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

Quick Emulator (Qemu) built with the USB EHCI Emulation support is vulnerable to a memory leakage issue. It could occur while processing packet data in 'ehci_init_transfer'. A guest user/process could use this issue to leak host memory, resulting in DoS for a host.

The bug was discovered 12/23/2016. The weakness was presented 12/23/2016 by Prasad J Pandit (Website). The advisory is shared at openwall.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-9911 since 12/08/2016. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 96100 (Debian DLA-765-1 : qemu-kvm security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 169489 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for qemu (SUSE-SU-2017:0127-1)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
