A timing attack flaw was found in OpenSSL 1.0.1u and before that could allow a malicious user with local access to recover ECDSA P-256 private keys.

The bug was discovered 01/10/2017. The weakness was published 01/10/2017 by Cesar Pereida García and Billy Bob Brumley as Cryptology ePrint Report 2016/1195 as confirmed paper (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at ia.cr. The public release has been coordinated with the project team. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2016-7056 since 08/23/2016. Attacking locally is a requirement. The requirement for exploitation is a single authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1600.001 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 22 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 99134 (macOS 10.12.x < 10.12.4 Multiple Vulnerabilities (httpoxy)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 175949 (Debian Security Update for openssl (DSA 3773-1)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at ia.cr. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
