of the file evutil.c. The manipulation of the argument ip_as_string
with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. Stack-based buffer overflow in the evutil_parse_sockaddr_port function in evutil.c in libevent before 2.1.6-beta allows attackers to cause a denial of service (segmentation fault) via vectors involving a long string in brackets in the ip_as_string argument.
The bug was discovered 01/31/2017. The weakness was shared 03/15/2017 by Guido Vranken (oss-sec). The advisory is shared at openwall.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-10196 since 02/01/2017. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 15 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. Upgrading to version 2.1.6-beta eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
