Buffer overflow in the QFILEPATHINFO request handler in Samba 3.0.x through 3.0.7 may allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a TRANSACT2_QFILEPATHINFO request with a small "maximum data bytes" value.
The bug was discovered 09/24/2004. The weakness was released 11/15/2004 by Stefan Esser (e-matters) with ematters (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at security.e-matters.de. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2004-0882 since 09/22/2004. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at sg.samba.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 2 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
