elf_compress.c in elfutils 0.168 does not validate the zlib compression factor, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory consumption) via a crafted ELF file.
The bug was discovered 04/03/2017. The weakness was presented 04/09/2017 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at blogs.gentoo.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2017-7609 since 04/09/2017. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
