CVE-2026-106932 in Moloni Plugininfo

Summary

by MITRE • 10/22/2026

The Moloni WordPress plugin before 5.0.14 does not perform capability or nonce checks on several of its authenticated AJAX actions, relying only on whether the site holds a stored connection to its external invoicing provider, allowing any authenticated user such as a Subscriber to generate fiscal invoices for arbitrary orders, discard arbitrary orders, and create or modify products and stock.

The vulnerability identified in Moloni WordPress plugin versions prior to 5.0.14 represents a critical failure in access control mechanisms within the application's AJAX endpoint handling logic. The core technical flaw lies in the absence of proper capability verification and nonce validation for several authenticated AJAX actions. In secure web applications, particularly those built on frameworks like WordPress, it is imperative that any action modifying state or performing sensitive operations verifies both the user's role-based permissions via capabilities and the integrity of the request through nonces to prevent Cross-Site Request Forgery attacks. The Moloni plugin bypasses these essential security controls by relying solely on a binary check for an active connection status with its external invoicing provider. This flawed logic assumes that if a valid API connection exists, any authenticated user interacting with the endpoint should be permitted to execute administrative functions associated with invoice generation and inventory management.

This architectural oversight allows attackers with even the lowest level of access, such as subscribers or contributors who typically have limited privileges on WordPress sites, to perform high-privilege operations. By exploiting this lack of authorization checks, an attacker can forge requests that trigger actions intended for administrators only. Specifically, the vulnerability enables the generation of fiscal invoices for arbitrary orders without proper verification of ownership or intent. Furthermore, it permits the discarding of existing orders and the creation or modification of products and stock levels. These capabilities fundamentally undermine the integrity of the e-commerce data managed by the plugin, as they allow unauthorized users to manipulate financial records and inventory counts at will.

The operational impact of this vulnerability is severe for businesses relying on Moloni for their accounting and invoicing processes. Unauthorized generation of fiscal invoices can lead to significant legal and compliance issues, particularly in jurisdictions with strict tax reporting requirements where invoice data must accurately reflect actual transactions. The ability to discard arbitrary orders disrupts business operations by creating discrepancies between sales records and fulfillment status, potentially leading to lost revenue or customer dissatisfaction due to unfulfilled or incorrectly processed orders. Additionally, the capacity to modify product details and stock levels can cause inventory management failures, resulting in overselling of out-of-stock items or inaccurate financial reporting based on false asset valuations.

From a classification perspective, this vulnerability aligns with CWE-284 Improper Access Control, as it involves unauthorized access by users who do not possess the necessary privileges to perform specific actions. It also relates to CWE-352 Cross-Site Request Forgery (CSRF) due to the lack of nonce validation, which is a standard defense against such attacks in WordPress environments. In terms of offensive security frameworks, this behavior corresponds to ATT&CK technique T1078 Valid Accounts, where an attacker leverages legitimate credentials with insufficiently restricted permissions to execute malicious activities within the system. The exploitation chain typically involves authenticating as a low-privilege user and then sending crafted AJAX requests that trigger the vulnerable endpoints, effectively escalating privileges through logical flaws rather than technical exploits of code execution vulnerabilities.

Mitigation strategies must focus on implementing robust authorization checks for all administrative functions exposed via AJAX. Developers should ensure that every sensitive action verifies the current user's capabilities against WordPress role definitions before proceeding with any state-changing operations. Additionally, integrating nonce verification is essential to protect against CSRF attacks and ensure request authenticity. For site administrators using affected versions of Moloni, immediate upgrading to version 5.0.14 or later is required to resolve these issues. Until the update is applied, restricting access to administrative areas and monitoring for unusual invoice generation patterns can help mitigate risk. Security audits should also review other custom plugins on WordPress installations to ensure they adhere to similar best practices regarding capability checks and nonce validation to prevent analogous vulnerabilities in future deployments.
