GNU Binutils 2.28 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory consumption) via a crafted ELF file with many program headers, related to the get_program_headers function in readelf.c.

The bug was discovered 05/12/2017. The weakness was shared 05/18/2017 by Agostino Sarubbo with Gentoo (Website). The advisory is available at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2017-9039 since 05/17/2017. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication.
