Details
A vulnerability was found in GNU binutils 2.28 (Programming Tool Software) and classified as problematic. This issue affects the function get_unwind_section_word of the file elfcomm.c of the component ELF File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-125. The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
GNU Binutils 2.28 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (heap-based buffer over-read and application crash) via a crafted ELF file, related to the byte_get_little_endian function in elfcomm.c, the get_unwind_section_word function in readelf.c, and ARM unwind information that contains invalid word offsets.
The bug was discovered 05/12/2017. The weakness was presented 05/18/2017 by Agostino Sarubbo with Gentoo (Website). The advisory is shared at securityfocus.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-9038 since 05/17/2017. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 5 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 103270 (GLSA-201709-02 : Binutils: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 170587 (OpenSUSE Security Update for binutils (openSUSE-SU-2017:3199-1)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 5 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
