Details
A vulnerability was found in GNU binutils 2.28 (Programming Tool Software). It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is the function process_mips_specific of the file readelf.c of the component ELF File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:
GNU Binutils 2017-04-03 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and application crash), related to the process_mips_specific function in readelf.c, via a crafted ELF file that triggers a large memory-allocation attempt.
The bug was discovered 05/12/2017. The weakness was published 05/18/2017 by Agostino Sarubbo with Gentoo (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2017-9040 since 05/17/2017. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 5 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 103270 (GLSA-201709-02 : Binutils: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 170587 (OpenSUSE Security Update for binutils (openSUSE-SU-2017:3199-1)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 5 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
