A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Office 2003/2007/2010 (Office Suite Software). It has been declared as very critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown processing of the component Word File Handler. The manipulation as part of a Word File leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Microsoft Word 2003 SP3, 2007 SP3, and 2010 SP1; Office Compatibility Pack SP3; and Word Viewer allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption) via a crafted Office document, aka "Word Memory Corruption Vulnerability."
The issue has been introduced in 11/17/2003. The weakness was published 09/10/2013 by Mateusz Jurczyk, Ben Hawkes and Ivan Fratric with Google Security Team as MS13-072 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared for download at technet.microsoft.com. The public release has been coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-3852 since 06/03/2013. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 05/24/2021).
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3585 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69832 (MS13-072: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2845537)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110216 (Microsoft Office Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS13-072)).
Applying the patch MS13-072 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 13183.
