A vulnerability was found in Squid Proxy up to 2.5 Stable7 (Firewall Software). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects an unknown part of the component Error Message Handler. Squid Web Proxy Cache 2.5 might allow remote attackers to obtain sensitive information via URLs containing invalid hostnames that cause DNS operations to fail, which results in references to previously used error messages.
The bug was discovered 12/09/2004. The weakness was published 12/09/2004 by Artur Szostak (Website). The advisory is shared at squid-cache.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2004-2479 since 08/21/2005. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but an exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1592 for this issue.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at squid-cache.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 10 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
