Linux Kernel up to 2.6.10 sys32_ni_syscall memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 2.6.10 and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function sys32_ni_syscall. The manipulation results in memory corruption. This vulnerability is identified as CVE-2004-1151. The attack can only be performed from the local network. There is not any exploit available. A patch should be applied to remediate this issue.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Linux Kernel up to 2.6.10 (Operating System). Affected is the function sys32_ni_syscall. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Multiple buffer overflows in the (1) sys32_ni_syscall and (2) sys32_vm86_warning functions in sys_ia32.c for Linux 2.6.x may allow local attackers to modify kernel memory and gain privileges.

The issue has been introduced in 12/18/2003. The weakness was released 11/30/2004 by Jeremy Fitzhardinge (Website). The advisory is available at ussg.iu.edu. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2004-1151 since 12/07/2004. The attack needs to be initiated within the local network. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 348 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 16259 (Mandrake Linux Security Advisory : kernel (MDKSA-2005:022)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks and running in the context l.

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at ussg.iu.edu. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (18404), Tenable (16259), SecurityFocus (BID 11938†), OSVDB (12284†) and Secunia (SA13410†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-947, VDB-945, VDB-946 and VDB-944. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
