Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in GNU binutils 2.28 (Programming Tool Software). Affected by this issue is the function getvalue of the file tekhex.c of the component libbfd. The manipulation as part of a File Descriptor leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The getvalue function in tekhex.c in the Binary File Descriptor (BFD) library (aka libbfd), as distributed in GNU Binutils 2.28, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (stack-based buffer over-read and application crash) via a crafted tekhex file, as demonstrated by mishandling within the nm program.
The bug was discovered 06/24/2017. The weakness was released 06/26/2017 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2017-9954 since 06/26/2017. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 103270 (GLSA-201709-02 : Binutils: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 170587 (OpenSUSE Security Update for binutils (openSUSE-SU-2017:3199-1)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
