A vulnerability has been found in Apple iOS up to 6.1.4 (Smartphone Operating System) and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects an unknown code of the component libxml. The manipulation of the argument XML File with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, and integrity. CVE summarizes:
Heap-based buffer underflow in the xmlParseAttValueComplex function in parser.c in libxml2 2.9.0 and earlier, as used in Google Chrome before 23.0.1271.91 and other products, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service or possibly execute arbitrary code via crafted entities in an XML document.

Multiple memory corruption issues existed in libxml. These issues were addressed by updating libxml to version 2.9.0.This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-5134 since 09/24/2012. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $5k-$25k (estimation calculated on 05/25/2021). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product increasing in the near future.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74846 (openSUSE Security Update : libxml2 (openSUSE-SU-2012:1647-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 216049 (VMWare ESXi 5.1.0 Patch Complete Update 1 Missing (KB2041632)).
Upgrading to version iOS 7.0 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.gnome.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
