Details
A vulnerability was found in Apple iOS up to 6.1.4 (Smartphone Operating System) and classified as very critical. This issue affects an unknown code block of the component libxslt. The manipulation of the argument XSLT File with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The XSL implementation in Google Chrome before 20.0.1132.43 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (incorrect read operation) via unspecified vectors.
The weakness was disclosed 09/18/2013 by Nicolas Gregoire (Inferno) with Chromium Development Community as APPLE-SA-2013-09-18-2 iOS 7 as confirmed mailinglist post (Website). The advisory is shared at prod.lists.apple.com. The mailinglist post contains:
Multiple memory corruption issues existed in libxslt. These issues were addressed by updating libxslt to version 1.1.28.The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-2825 since 05/19/2012. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 05/25/2021). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product increasing in the near future.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74680 (openSUSE Security Update : libxslt / libxslt-python (openSUSE-SU-2012:0883-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 216049 (VMWare ESXi 5.1.0 Patch Complete Update 1 Missing (KB2041632)).
Upgrading to version iOS 7.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (76581), Tenable (74680), SecurityFocus (BID 54203†), Secunia (SA54886†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-35466†). zdnet.com is providing further details. The entries VDB-4619, VDB-4675, VDB-4996 and VDB-5407 are pretty similar. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
