Apple iOS up to 6.1.4 libxslt XSLT File resource management

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Apple iOS up to 6.1.4 (Smartphone Operating System). It has been classified as very critical. Affected is some unknown processing of the component libxslt. The manipulation of the argument XSLT File with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-399. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

libxslt 1.1.26 and earlier, as used in Google Chrome before 21.0.1180.89, does not properly manage memory, which might allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a crafted XSLT expression that is not properly identified during XPath navigation, related to (1) the xsltCompileLocationPathPattern function in libxslt/pattern.c and (2) the xsltGenerateIdFunction function in libxslt/functions.c.

The weakness was presented 09/18/2013 by Nicolas Gregoire (miaubiz) with Google Security Team as APPLE-SA-2013-09-18-2 iOS 7 as confirmed mailinglist post (Website). The advisory is available at prod.lists.apple.com. The mailinglist post contains:

Multiple memory corruption issues existed in libxslt. These issues were addressed by updating libxslt to version 1.1.28.
This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2012-2870 since 05/19/2012. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 05/25/2021). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product increasing in the near future.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 71907 (GLSA-201401-07 : libxslt: Denial of Service), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 216049 (VMWare ESXi 5.1.0 Patch Complete Update 1 Missing (KB2041632)).

Upgrading to version iOS 7.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (78180), Tenable (71907), SecurityFocus (BID 55331†), Secunia (SA50838†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-36062†).
