Apple iOS up to 6.1.4 libxslt XSLT File type conversion

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Apple iOS up to 6.1.4 (Smartphone Operating System). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown function of the component libxslt. The manipulation of the argument XSLT File with an unknown input leads to a type conversion vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-704. The product does not correctly convert an object, resource, or structure from one type to a different type. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

libxml2 2.9.0-rc1 and earlier, as used in Google Chrome before 21.0.1180.89, does not properly support a cast of an unspecified variable during handling of XSL transforms, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service or possibly have unknown other impact via a crafted document, related to the _xmlNs data structure in include/libxml/tree.h.

The weakness was shared 09/18/2013 by Kai Lu and Nicolas Gregoire (miaubiz) with Google Security Team as APPLE-SA-2013-09-18-2 iOS 7 as confirmed mailinglist post (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at prod.lists.apple.com. The mailinglist post contains:

Multiple memory corruption issues existed in libxslt. These issues were addressed by updating libxslt to version 1.1.28.
This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-2871 since 05/19/2012. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 05/25/2021). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product increasing in the near future.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70836 (GLSA-201311-06 : libxml2: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 216049 (VMWare ESXi 5.1.0 Patch Complete Update 1 Missing (KB2041632)).

Upgrading to version iOS 7.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (78179), Tenable (70836), SecurityFocus (BID 55331†), Secunia (SA50838†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-36063†). Additional details are provided at zdnet.com. The entries VDB-4619, VDB-4675, VDB-4996 and VDB-5407 are related to this item.
