The bug was discovered 08/08/2017. The weakness was released 08/08/2017 with FortiGuard Labs as KB4034664 as confirmed security update guide (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at portal.msrc.microsoft.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2017-8691 since 05/03/2017. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. A remote code execution vulnerability exists when the Windows font library improperly handles specially crafted embedded fonts. An attacker who successfully exploits exploited this vulnerability would gain code execution on the target system. Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer user rights on the system could be less impacted than users who operate with administrative user rights.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 102267 (Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 August 2017 Security Updates), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 91405 (Microsoft Windows Security Update August 2017).
Applying the patch KB4034664 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at catalog.update.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
