A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in ImageMagick 7.0.6-6 (Image Processing Software). This issue affects the function ReadOneLayer of the file coders/xcf.c. The ReadOneLayer function in coders/xcf.c in ImageMagick 7.0.6-6 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory consumption) via a crafted file.
The bug was discovered 08/08/2017. The weakness was disclosed 09/01/2017 (GitHub Repository). It is possible to read the advisory at github.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-12691 since 08/08/2017. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 176900 (Debian Security Update for imagemagick (DLA 1785-1)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
