Linux Foundation Xen up to 4.3.0 VIF Parser tools/libxl/libxlu_vif.c xlu_vif_parse_rate null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability described as problematic has been identified in Linux Foundation Xen 4.2.0/4.2.1/4.2.2/4.2.3/4.3.0. The impacted element is the function xlu_vif_parse_rate of the file tools/libxl/libxlu_vif.c of the component VIF Parser. Executing a manipulation can lead to null pointer dereference. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-4369. There is not any exploit available. A patch should be applied to remediate this issue.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Linux Foundation Xen 4.2.0/4.2.1/4.2.2/4.2.3/4.3.0 (Virtualization Software). This vulnerability affects the function xlu_vif_parse_rate of the file tools/libxl/libxlu_vif.c of the component VIF Parser. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:

The xlu_vif_parse_rate function in the libxlu library in Xen 4.2.x and 4.3.x allows local users to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference) by using the "@" character as the VIF rate configuration.

The weakness was released 10/10/2013 by Matthew Daley and Coverty Scan as possible null dereference when parsing vif ratelimiting info as not defined mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is available at seclists.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-4369 since 06/12/2013. Local access is required to approach this attack. The requirement for exploitation is a single authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70549 (Fedora 19 : xen-4.2.3-4.fc19 (2013-19048)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166560 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security update for Xen (SUSE-SU-2013:1774-1)).

Applying the patch xsa68 is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (87798), Tenable (70549), SecurityFocus (BID 62931†), OSVDB (98288†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-42575†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-10665, VDB-10667, VDB-10668 and VDB-10674. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
