Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Linux Foundation Xen 4.2.0/4.2.1/4.2.2/4.2.3/4.3.0 (Virtualization Software). This issue affects the function xc_vcpu_getaffinity of the file ocaml/libs/xc/xenctrl_stubs.c of the component Pointer Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
The ocaml binding for the xc_vcpu_getaffinity function in Xen 4.2.x and 4.3.x frees certain memory that may still be intended for use, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (heap corruption and crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via unspecified vectors that trigger a (1) use-after-free or (2) double free.
The weakness was disclosed 10/10/2013 by Matthew Daley and Coverty Scan as misplaced free in ocaml xc_vcpu_getaffinity stub as not defined mailinglist post (oss-sec). It is possible to read the advisory at seclists.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-4370 since 06/12/2013. Attacking locally is a requirement. Required for exploitation is a simple authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70549 (Fedora 19 : xen-4.2.3-4.fc19 (2013-19048)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166560 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security update for Xen (SUSE-SU-2013:1774-1)).
Applying the patch xsa69 is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (87796), Tenable (70549), SecurityFocus (BID 62930†), OSVDB (98289†) and Secunia (SA55239†). The entries VDB-10665, VDB-10666, VDB-10668 and VDB-10674 are pretty similar. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
