NTP before 4.2.8p9 allows remote attackers to bypass the origin timestamp protection mechanism via an origin timestamp of zero. NOTE: this vulnerability exists because of a CVE-2015-8138 regression.

The bug was discovered 11/21/2016. The weakness was presented 10/19/2017 with Boston University as Oracle Critical Patch Update Advisory - October 2017 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at oracle.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-7431 since 09/09/2016. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
