A vulnerability has been found in Oracle M10-1, M10-4, M10-4S, M12-1, M12-2 and M12-2S and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects an unknown code of the component XCP Firmware. NTP before 4.2.8p9 allows remote attackers to bypass the origin timestamp protection mechanism via an origin timestamp of zero. NOTE: this vulnerability exists because of a CVE-2015-8138 regression.
The bug was discovered 11/21/2016. The weakness was presented 10/19/2017 with Boston University as Oracle Critical Patch Update Advisory - October 2017 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at oracle.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-7431 since 09/09/2016. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 95265 (FreeBSD : ntp -- multiple vulnerabilities (8db8d62a-b08b-11e6-8eba-d050996490d0)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 371402 (Cisco UCS 6200 Series Fabric Interconnects Multiple Vulnerabilities in Network Time Protocol Daemon (CSCvc23476)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
