A vulnerability has been found in Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird 24.0 (Web Browser) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects the function nsIOService::NewChannelFromURIWithProxyFlags of the component Blob URL Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a use after free vulnerability. Use-after-free vulnerability in the nsIOService::NewChannelFromURIWithProxyFlags function in Mozilla Firefox before 25.0, Firefox ESR 17.x before 17.0.10 and 24.x before 24.1, Thunderbird before 24.1, Thunderbird ESR 17.x before 17.0.10, and SeaMonkey before 2.22 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via vectors involving a blob: URL.
The weakness was released 10/29/2013 by Nils as Mozilla Foundation Security Advisory 2013-100 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at mozilla.org. The public release was coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-5600 since 08/26/2013. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70688 (CentOS 5 / 6 : firefox (CESA-2013:1476)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks.
