A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird 24.0 (Web Browser) and classified as very critical. This issue affects the function nsEventListenerManager::SetEventHandler. Use-after-free vulnerability in the nsEventListenerManager::SetEventHandler function in Mozilla Firefox before 25.0, Firefox ESR 17.x before 17.0.10 and 24.x before 24.1, Thunderbird before 24.1, Thunderbird ESR 17.x before 17.0.10, and SeaMonkey before 2.22 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via vectors related to a memory allocation through the garbage collection (GC) API.
The weakness was disclosed 10/29/2013 by Nils as Mozilla Foundation Security Advisory 2013-100 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at mozilla.org. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with Mozilla. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-5601 since 08/26/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 11/25/2025).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70688 (CentOS 5 / 6 : firefox (CESA-2013:1476)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121562 (Red Hat Update for Xulrunner Firefox (RHSA-2013:1476)).
Upgrading to version 25.0 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at mozilla.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
