A vulnerability has been found in Joomla CMS up to 3.8.7 (Content Management System) and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown processing of the component Background Process Handler. The manipulation as part of a Update leads to a race condition vulnerability. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. An issue was discovered in Joomla! Core before 3.8.8. A long running background process, such as remote checks for core or extension updates, could create a race condition where a session that was expected to be destroyed would be recreated.
The bug was discovered 05/07/2018. The weakness was published 05/22/2018 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2018-11324 since 05/21/2018. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication.
