A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Office Compability Pack and Word 2007 SP3 (Word Processing Software). It has been declared as very critical. The weakness was published 01/14/2014 by Mateusz Jurczyk, Ben Hawkes and Ivan Fratric with Google Security Team as MS14-001 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at technet.microsoft.com. The public release has been coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2014-0259 since 12/03/2013. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 06/08/2021).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 71941 (MS14-001: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Word and Office Web Apps Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2916605)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110233 (Microsoft Word and Office Web Apps Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS14-001)).
Applying the patch MS14-001 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 13076.
