win32k.sys in the kernel-mode drivers in Microsoft Windows 7 SP1 and Server 2008 R2 SP1 does not properly consider thread-owned objects during the processing of window handles, which allows local users to gain privileges via a crafted application, aka "Win32k Window Handle Vulnerability."
The weakness was disclosed 01/14/2014 by Xiaohong Shi with Qihoo 360 Security Center as MS14-003 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared for download at technet.microsoft.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2014-0262 since 12/03/2013. The attack needs to be approached locally. A authentication is necessary for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 71943 (MS14-003: Vulnerability in Windows Kernel-Mode Driver Could Allow Elevation of Privilege (2913602)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90936 (Microsoft Windows Kernel-Mode Drivers Elevation of Privilege Vulnerability (MS14-003)).
