A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Word, Office and Sharepoint (Word Processing Software). It has been rated as very critical. This issue affects some unknown functionality of the component Office File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Microsoft Word 2003 SP3, 2007 SP3, 2010 SP1 and SP2, 2013, and 2013 RT; Office Compatibility Pack SP3; Word Viewer; SharePoint Server 2010 SP1 and SP2 and 2013; Office Web Apps 2010 SP1 and SP2; and Office Web Apps Server 2013 allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption) via a crafted Office document, aka "Word Memory Corruption Vulnerability."
The weakness was released 01/14/2014 by Mateusz Jurczyk, Ben Hawkes and Ivan Fratric with Google Security Team as MS14-001 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at technet.microsoft.com. The public release was coordinated with Microsoft. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-0260 since 12/03/2013. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 06/08/2021).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 71941 (MS14-001: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Word and Office Web Apps Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2916605)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110233 (Microsoft Word and Office Web Apps Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS14-001)).
Applying the patch MS14-001 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
