gtkimhtml.c in Pidgin before 2.10.8 does not properly interact with underlying library support for wide Pango layouts, which allows user-assisted remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a long URL that is examined with a tooltip.

The weakness was disclosed 01/28/2014 by Coverity static analysis (acer.aspire.one.110) with Coverity static analysis as Crash when hovering pointer over a long URL as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at pidgin.im. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-6478 since 11/04/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 72352 (CentOS 5 / 6 : pidgin (CESA-2014:0139)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 175276 (Debian Security Update for pidgin (DSA-2859-1)).

Upgrading to version 2.10.8 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at hg.pidgin.im. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The advisory contains the following remark:
