Pidgin 2.10.7 MSN Module Content-Length input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Pidgin 2.10.7 (Messaging Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown function of the component MSN Module. The manipulation of the argument Content-Length with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:

Pidgin before 2.10.8 allows remote MSN servers to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and crash) via a crafted (1) SOAP response, (2) OIM XML response, or (3) Content-Length header.

The weakness was published 01/28/2014 by Fabian Yamaguchi and Christian Wressnegger with Universität Göttingen as NULL pointer dereference parsing headers in MSN as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at pidgin.im. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-6482 since 11/04/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 72352 (CentOS 5 / 6 : pidgin (CESA-2014:0139)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 175276 (Debian Security Update for pidgin (DSA-2859-1)).

Upgrading to version 2.10.8 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at hg.pidgin.im. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
