Pidgin 2.10.7 XMPP Protocol Plugin from input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Pidgin 2.10.7 (Messaging Software). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown part of the component XMPP Protocol Plugin. The manipulation of the argument from as part of a IQ Reply leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. Impacted is confidentiality, and integrity. The summary by CVE is:

The XMPP protocol plugin in libpurple in Pidgin before 2.10.8 does not properly determine whether the from address in an iq reply is consistent with the to address in an iq request, which allows remote attackers to spoof iq traffic or cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and application crash) via a crafted reply.

The weakness was presented 01/28/2014 as XMPP doesn't verify 'from' on some iq replies as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at pidgin.im. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-6483 since 11/04/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 72352 (CentOS 5 / 6 : pidgin (CESA-2014:0139)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 175276 (Debian Security Update for pidgin (DSA-2859-1)).

Upgrading to version 2.10.8 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at hg.pidgin.im. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (91301), Tenable (72352), OSVDB (102621†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-43168†). linux-magazin.de is providing further details.
