gtkutils.c in Pidgin before 2.10.8 on Windows allows user-assisted remote attackers to execute arbitrary programs via a message containing a file: URL that is improperly handled during construction of an explorer.exe command. NOTE: this vulnerability exists because of an incomplete fix for CVE-2011-3185.
The bug was discovered 01/28/2014. The weakness was released 01/28/2014 by James Burton and Yves Younan with Sourcefire VRT as Pidgin uses clickable links to untrusted executables as not defined advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at pidgin.im. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-6486 since 11/04/2013. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
