Details
A vulnerability was found in Pidgin 2.10.7 (Messaging Software) and classified as very critical. This issue affects some unknown functionality of the component HTTP Response Handler. The manipulation of the argument Content-Length as part of a Negative Value leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The SIMPLE protocol functionality in Pidgin before 2.10.8 allows remote attackers to have an unspecified impact via a negative Content-Length header, which triggers a buffer overflow.
The weakness was shared 01/28/2014 by Yves Younan with Sourcefire as Buffer overflow in SIMPLE header parsing as not defined advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at pidgin.im. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-6490 since 11/04/2013. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 06/08/2021).
