Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in haxx.se cURL up to 7.34.0 (Network Utility Software) and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects an unknown code block of the component HTTP NTLM Connection Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a improper authentication vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-287. When an actor claims to have a given identity, the product does not prove or insufficiently proves that the claim is correct. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, and integrity. CVE summarizes:

cURL and libcurl 7.10.6 through 7.34.0, when more than one authentication method is enabled, re-uses NTLM connections, which might allow context-dependent attackers to authenticate as other users via a request.

The weakness was released 01/07/2014 by Paras Sethia as adv_20140129 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at curl.haxx.se. This vulnerability was named CVE-2014-0015 since 12/03/2013. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The advisory points out:

Due to a logical error in the code, a request that was issued by an application could wrongfully re-use an existing connection to the same server that was authenticated using different credentials. One underlying reason being that NTLM authenticates connections and not requests, contrary to how HTTP is designed to work and how other authentication methods work.

After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74203 (Oracle Linux 6 : curl (ELSA-2014-0561)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 43619 (Juniper Junos OS Multiple vulnerabilities in cURL versions (JSA10874)).

Upgrading to version 7.35.0 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. It is possible to mitigate the problem by applying the configuration setting CURLOPT_FRESH_CONNECT/CURLOPT_MAXCONNECTS/CURLMOPT_MAX_HOST_CONNECTIONS. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 4 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The advisory contains the following remark:

This fix is already committed to the public source code repository because the full security impact wasn't properly realized until after the fact. (…) Avoid using HTTP NTLM in your application, or make sure to *only* specify NTLM as the requested authentication method.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (90841), Tenable (74203), SecurityFocus (BID 65270†), OSVDB (102715†) and Secunia (SA56728†).
