A vulnerability classified as critical was found in haxx.se cURL up to 7.30.0 (Network Utility Software). This vulnerability affects the function curl_easy_unescape of the file lib/escape.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Heap-based buffer overflow in the curl_easy_unescape function in lib/escape.c in cURL and libcurl 7.7 through 7.30.0 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted string ending in a "%" (percent) character.

The weakness was disclosed 06/22/2013 by Timo Sirainen as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at curl.haxx.se. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-2174 since 02/19/2013. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can only be done within the local network. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67221 (SuSE 11.2 Security Update : curl (SAT Patch Number 7867)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 43619 (Juniper Junos OS Multiple vulnerabilities in cURL versions (JSA10874)).

Upgrading to version 7.31.0 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
