Summary
A vulnerability was found in haxx.se cURL and classified as problematic. This issue affects some unknown processing of the component CN/SAN Name Field Handler. Executing a manipulation can lead to input validation. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-6422. Furthermore, there is an exploit available.
Details
A vulnerability was found in haxx.se cURL (Network Utility Software). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown code of the component CN/SAN Name Field Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, and integrity. CVE summarizes:
The GnuTLS backend in libcurl 7.21.4 through 7.33.0, when disabling digital signature verification (CURLOPT_SSL_VERIFYPEER), also disables the CURLOPT_SSL_VERIFYHOST check for CN or SAN host name fields, which makes it easier for remote attackers to spoof servers and conduct man-in-the-middle (MITM) attacks.
The weakness was shared 12/19/2013 by Marc Deslauriers as DSA 2824-1 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at debian.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-6422 since 11/04/2013. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The advisory points out:
The default configuration for the curl package is not affected by this issue since the digital signature verification is enabled by default.
After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 71531 (Ubuntu 12.04 LTS / 12.10 / 13.04 / 13.10 : curl vulnerability (USN-2058-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 43619 (Juniper Junos OS Multiple vulnerabilities in cURL versions (JSA10874)).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (71531), SecurityFocus (BID 64431†), OSVDB (101177†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-51332†). Additional details are provided at seclists.org. The entries VDB-8439, VDB-9262, VDB-10906 and VDB-11245 are related to this item. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
