FreeBSD up to 11.1 Stack Guard memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in FreeBSD up to 11.1 (Operating System). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects an unknown functionality of the component Stack Guard. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

In FreeBSD before 11.2-RELEASE, multiple issues with the implementation of the stack guard-page reduce the protections afforded by the guard-page. This results in the possibility a poorly written process could be cause a stack overflow.

The bug was discovered 06/19/2017. The weakness was shared 09/12/2018 with Qualys as EDB-ID 42277 as not defined exploit (Exploit-DB). The advisory is shared at exploit-db.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-1084 since 11/29/2016. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 450 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370433 (FreeBSD Advisory for kernel/ glibc Elevation of Privileges (Stack Clash)).

Upgrading to version 11.2-RELEASE eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (42277) and SecurityFocus (BID 99130†). The entries VDB-102671, VDB-102673, VDB-123928 and VDB-123930 are related to this item. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
