GNU C Library up to 2.25 LD_LIBRARY_PATH memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability marked as critical has been reported in GNU C Library up to 2.25. Affected is an unknown function. This manipulation of the argument LD_LIBRARY_PATH causes memory corruption. This vulnerability appears as CVE-2017-1000366. The attack requires local access. In addition, an exploit is available. It is suggested to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in GNU C Library up to 2.25 (Software Library). Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code. The manipulation of the argument LD_LIBRARY_PATH with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

glibc contains a vulnerability that allows specially crafted LD_LIBRARY_PATH values to manipulate the heap/stack, causing them to alias, potentially resulting in arbitrary code execution. Please note that additional hardening changes have been made to glibc to prevent manipulation of stack and heap memory but these issues are not directly exploitable, as such they have not been given a CVE. This affects glibc 2.25 and earlier.

The bug was discovered 06/20/2017. The weakness was presented 06/19/2017 with Qualys (Website). The advisory is shared at access.redhat.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2017-1000366 since 06/19/2017. The exploitation appears to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.

A public exploit has been developed by Qualys Corporation in ANSI C and been published 2 weeks after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 100873 (Amazon Linux AMI : glibc (ALAS-2017-844) (Stack Clash)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370433 (FreeBSD Advisory for kernel/ glibc Elevation of Privileges (Stack Clash)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (42274), Tenable (100873) and SecurityFocus (BID 99127†). See VDB-102671, VDB-123928, VDB-123929 and VDB-123930 for similar entries. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
