FreeBSD up to 11.1 setrlimit memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in FreeBSD up to 11.1. This issue affects the function setrlimit. The manipulation results in memory corruption. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2017-1085. Attacking locally is a requirement. Furthermore, an exploit is available. You should upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in FreeBSD up to 11.1 (Operating System). Affected is the function setrlimit. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

In FreeBSD before 11.2-RELEASE, an application which calls setrlimit() to increase RLIMIT_STACK may turn a read-only memory region below the stack into a read-write region. A specially crafted executable could be exploited to execute arbitrary code in the user context.

The bug was discovered 06/19/2017. The weakness was published 09/12/2018 with Qualys as EDB-ID 42279 as not defined exploit (Exploit-DB). The advisory is available at exploit-db.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2017-1085 since 11/29/2016. Local access is required to approach this attack. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details and a public exploit are known.

After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 450 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370433 (FreeBSD Advisory for kernel/ glibc Elevation of Privileges (Stack Clash)).

Upgrading to version 11.2-RELEASE eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (42279) and SecurityFocus (BID 99130†). Similar entries are available at VDB-102671, VDB-102673, VDB-123928 and VDB-123929. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
