A vulnerability has been found in Linux Foundation Xen (Virtualization Software) and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code of the component Memory Allocation Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Xen 3.3 through 4.1, when XSM is enabled, allows local users to cause a denial of service via vectors related to a "large memory allocation," a different vulnerability than CVE-2014-1891, CVE-2014-1893, and CVE-2014-1894.
The weakness was published 02/10/2014 by Matthew Daley as XSA-84 as confirmed mailinglist post (Mailing List). It is possible to read the advisory at xenbits.xenproject.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2014-1892 since 02/07/2014. The exploitation appears to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 79529 (OracleVM 3.2 : xen (OVMSA-2014-0001)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family OracleVM Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166935 (OpenSuSE Security Update for xen (openSUSE-SU-2014:0483-1)).
Applying the patch xsa84-4.1.patch/xsa84-4.2.patch/xsa84-unstable-4.3.patch is able to eliminate this problem.
