Use-after-free vulnerability in modules/speech/SpeechSynthesis.cpp in Blink, as used in Google Chrome before 33.0.1750.149, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service or possibly have unspecified other impact by leveraging improper handling of a certain utterance data structure.

The weakness was disclosed 03/11/2014 by Chamal De Silva with Google as Stable Channel Update, March 2014 as confirmed posting (Blogspot). The advisory is shared for download at googlechromereleases.blogspot.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2014-1700 since 01/29/2014. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 75318 (openSUSE Security Update : chromium (openSUSE-SU-2014:0501-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 122901 (Debian Security Update for chromium-browser (DSA 2883-1)).

Upgrading to version 33.0.1750.149 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at chrome.google.com. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
