The GenerateFunction function in bindings/scripts/code_generator_v8.pm in Blink, as used in Google Chrome before 33.0.1750.149, does not implement a certain cross-origin restriction for the EventTarget::dispatchEvent function, which allows remote attackers to conduct Universal XSS (UXSS) attacks via vectors involving events.

The weakness was presented 03/11/2014 by Chamal De Silva with Google as Stable Channel Update, March 2014 as confirmed posting (Blogspot). The advisory is shared at googlechromereleases.blogspot.dk. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-1701 since 01/29/2014. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are unknown but an exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue.

It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 73164 (Debian DSA-2883-1 : chromium-browser - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 122901 (Debian Security Update for chromium-browser (DSA 2883-1)).

Upgrading to version 33.0.1750.149 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at chrome.google.com. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
