Details
A vulnerability was found in FasterXML jackson-databind up to 2.9.6 (Programming Language Software). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function axis2-jaxws of the component Deserialization. The manipulation as part of a Request leads to a server-side request forgery vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-918. The web server receives a URL or similar request from an upstream component and retrieves the contents of this URL, but it does not sufficiently ensure that the request is being sent to the expected destination. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
FasterXML jackson-databind 2.x before 2.9.7 might allow remote attackers to conduct server-side request forgery (SSRF) attacks by leveraging failure to block the axis2-jaxws class from polymorphic deserialization.
The bug was discovered 07/27/2018. The weakness was disclosed 01/02/2019 (GitHub Repository). The advisory is shared at github.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2018-14721 since 07/28/2018. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 159 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 121251 (Oracle Primavera Unifier Multiple Vulnerabilities (Jan 2019 CPU)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 176635 (Debian Security Update for jackson-databind (DLA 1703-1)).
Upgrading to version 2.9.7 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
