Details
A vulnerability was found in rdesktop up to 1.8.3. It has been classified as critical. Affected is the function seamless_process. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
rdesktop versions up to and including v1.8.3 contain an Integer Underflow that leads to a Heap-Based Buffer Overflow in the function seamless_process() and results in memory corruption and probably even a remote code execution.
The bug was discovered 02/05/2019. The weakness was published 03/15/2019 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at research.checkpoint.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2018-20181 since 12/17/2018. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 38 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 371697 (Remote Desktop Protocol Client 'rdesktop' 1.8.3 and Prior Multiple Security Vulnerabilities).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
