A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in PHP up to 7.1.28/7.2.17/7.3.4 (Programming Language Software). Affected by this issue is the function exif_process_IFD_TAG of the component EXIF Extension. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. When processing certain files, PHP EXIF extension in versions 7.1.x below 7.1.29, 7.2.x below 7.2.18 and 7.3.x below 7.3.5 can be caused to read past allocated buffer in exif_process_IFD_TAG function. This may lead to information disclosure or crash.

The bug was discovered 04/30/2019. The weakness was disclosed 05/03/2019 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2019-11036 since 04/09/2019. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 172411 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for php5 (SUSE-SU-2019:1325-1)).

Upgrading to version 7.1.29, 7.2.18 or 7.3.5 eliminates this vulnerability.
