A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox 1.5 (Web Browser). It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown function of the component Dynamic Style Handler. The manipulation of the argument position with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-404. Mozilla Firefox 1.5, Netscape 8.0.4 and 7.2, and K-Meleon before 0.9.12 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (CPU consumption and delayed application startup) via a web site with a large title, which is recorded in history.dat but not processed efficiently during startup. NOTE: despite initial reports, the Mozilla vendor does not believe that this issue can be used to trigger a crash or buffer overflow in Firefox. Also, it has been independently reported that Netscape 8.1 does not have this issue.
The weakness was presented 02/02/2006 by Martijn Wargers (moz_bug_r_a4) with Martijn Wargers as MFSA2006-02 as not defined advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at mozilla.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2005-4134 since 12/09/2005. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1499 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
A public exploit has been developed in Perl Module. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21983 (CentOS 4 : firefox (CESA-2006:0200)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117751 (CentOS Security Update for Firefox (CESA-2006:0200)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at mozilla.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 3 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 9037.
