A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox up to 1.5 (Web Browser). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is the function QueryInterface of the component Location Navigator. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. The Javascript interpreter (jsinterp.c) in Mozilla and Firefox before 1.5.1 does not properly dereference objects, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) or execute arbitrary code via unknown attack vectors related to garbage collection.
The weakness was shared 02/02/2006 by Georgi Guninski (moz_bug_r_a4) with Martijn Wargers as MFSA2006-04 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at mozilla.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2006-0292 since 01/18/2006. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21994 (CentOS 4 : thunderbird (CESA-2006:0330)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at mozilla.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
